ROMAN VILLA OF ELS MUNTS (Villa Roman dels Munts) N-340, Km 1,174. Altafulla.

The archaeological site of "Els Munts" is a must-see in Altafulla.

In Roman times, large country villas were a place to spend leisure time, and served as working farms as well. Several villas have been discovered around Tarragona, the most noteworthy being those of Centcelles (Constantí) and Els Munts (Altafulla). The latter was already known as a Roman site in the 16th century, although organized excavations of the area did not begin until the 1960s. Based on existing archaeological data, the site was first occupied in the middle of the 1st century AD. During the "Cayo Valerio Avit" period (middle of the II century), Cayo Valerio resided in the villa, and had a most glorious time having such a lavish palace. It was destroyed in the III century A.D. but it was not abandoned totally until the VI century.

The Roman villa of Els Munts It is the most important roman villa in Catalonia. Els Munts was one impressive and luxurious villa - it had marble plaques decorations, very fine sculptures, mosaics floors, preparing and processing rooms for agricultural produce, latrines, and three sets of baths with cold and hot water. Most of the rooms in the villa were paved with polychromatic mosaics and the walls and ceilings were decorated with fine paintings. The thermal baths had mosaic floors and today, what remains of the walls of the pools are significant remainders of marble. This ornamentation, together with the statues discovered largely in the area of the thermal baths, gives us an idea of the absolute splendor of the entire complex.
